Smoke Detector Chirps After Battery Change. If your smoke detector does not need to be reset after a battery change nor is there a visible fire in the vicinity then the following could be some of the possible reasons that the smoke detector is chirping. Smoke detectors are intended to make a chirping noise once the battery needs changing.

This will allow the steam or humidity to temporarily dissipate and clear the smoke detector sensor. Press and hold the test button for 15-30 seconds. This usually occurs in electrical powered smoke alarms with a battery backup.
With the battery removed press and hold the test button for 15-20 seconds.
Most alarms expire 7-10 years after the manufacture date. With a low battery announcement disconnect the unit and replace the batteries. This will allow the steam or humidity to temporarily dissipate and clear the smoke detector sensor. Remove the alarm from your ceiling or wall.
